Rev up those engines and head on down to Kona Town Night Market’s second annual Fathers and Fenders this weekend in Kailua-Kona.
From a car show, lowrider limbo and burn out to live entertainment, keiki activities and a swimwear showcase, the 6-11 p.m. Saturday party is sure to have something for everyone. There will also be vendors selling goods and food.
And it’s all free, said Lisa Johnson, creative director for the Kona Town Night Market, which has been taking place since late summer 2014. The market is held at Kona Brewing Co.’s parking lot at the end of Pawai Place.
“We’re expecting about 80 cars — all different vehicles as part of our showcase,” she said, adding that the market is collaborating with Neil Kamimura of local car club Severed in Hawaii, a chapter of the worldwide club Severed Ties, for the event
“We have a little bit of everything,” Kamimura said.
Kamimura, one of three Severed Ties members in the state, said the car show will feature classics from the 1930s all the way up to the 1950s, as well as imports and lifted trucks. Though the local car club is small, Kamimura brought together members of other clubs to take part in the show.
“We’re friends with all the other car clubs,” he said. “We’ve all been building cars since we were little kids.”
The event, which strives to promote local businesses and buying locally, also has a beneficial component with Kona Brewing Co.’s Beer Garden giving proceeds from libation sales to the Donkey Mill Art Center. The nonprofit art center, located in Holualoa, will also have art activities for the keiki.
Youngsters can also take part in laser tag with obstacles and try their hand at racing electric cars on a 26-foot NASCAR-themed track.
“It’s a new take on old slot car racing,” Kamimura said.
“We have some good free activities for them,” Johnson said.
Two live deejays will be mixing beats throughout the evening. The main act, Dawn Patrol, takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. A swimwear showcase of locally made items takes center stage at 8.
At Severed Circle, where the car show will be located, a lowrider limbo is scheduled for 7 p.m. and a burnout at 9.
“The lowriders will challenge each other under the limbo stick,” explained Johnson.
In addition to the live entertainment, car show and fun, Kona Town Night Market will also delve into sustainability, part of its Community Enrichment Program grant through the Hawaii Tourism Authority and County of Hawaii. Last month, the event covered composting. This month, the topic is recycling, which will include where to take used motor oil and other items.
“They will have some great new information on common household items,” said Johnson.
